How Solar Costs Work in South Africa
- System size matters most. A 5kW system (R85K-R130K) covers a typical 3-bed home. A 10kW system (R150K-R250K) covers larger homes with pool pumps.
- Batteries are optional but expensive. Without batteries, solar only works during the day. With batteries, you get load shedding coverage — but it adds R25K-R150K to the cost.
- Payback is faster than you think. Eskom tariffs increase 12%+ per year. A system that takes 5 years to pay back today would take 3 years if Eskom keeps increasing.
- Section 12B tax incentive. Individuals can deduct 25% of solar panel costs from their taxable income (up to R15,000 per year). Ask your tax advisor.
